On August 1st, Chris Wallace interviewed Hillary Clinton on his Sunday show Fox News Sunday. The interview received a lot of attention afterward becauseĀ Mrs. Clinton misrepresented the FBI director's conclusion after investigating her e-mail server.
However, upon listening to it, I heard several opportunities for Chris Wallace to ask Mrs. Clinton difficult questions. I'm really not surprised about the lack of follow-up from Wallace, not because I think he's worse than anyone else, but because none of those interviewers are particularly good at asking tough follow-up questions. I believe they prepare for the interviews by devising what they believe are difficult questions and wait for the responses but aren't adroit enough to challenge their answers. They'd prefer to move on to the next question.
Wallace had two great opportunities during this interview.
Now, I'm not sure if I want a real cross-examination; these are media interviews not court cross-examinations after all. But I think one or two tough follow-ups to really gauge how well the interview subjects know what they're talking about and what they're doing would be appropriate.
